Abstract

Simo Gringsing Dance is a newly created choreographic work developed by Yoyok B. Priyambodo in collaboration with Greget Studio in 2017. This dance combines traditional movement idioms from Surakarta, Yogyakarta, and the northern coastal region of Central Java, while portraying the figure of Ki Ageng Gringsing as a symbol of religiosity, bravery, and moral exemplarity. This study aims to describe the performance structure of the Simo Gringsing Dance, which includes dancers, movement, musical accompaniment, makeup, costume, properties, performance space, sound system, and lighting. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method using an emic approach through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that Simo Gringsing Dance emphasizes a charismatic character through the integration of firm movements, traditional and Islamic-nuanced musical accompaniment, and symbolic properties. This study contributes to the field of regional performing arts studies and serves as a documentary reference for the development of new tradition-based creative dances.
