Bahalarat Dance Learning as an Effort to Preserve Dayak Culture at State Senior High School 3 Pangkalan Bun

Bahalarat Dance is one of the tradisional dances of the Dayak tribe in Central Kalimantan, symbolizing togetherness and respect for nature. However, along with the rapid modernization, its existence has gradually declined and is rarely practiced by the younger generation. This study aims to describe the form and values of the Bahalarat Dance, explain the learning process of the dance at State Senior High School 3 Pangkalan Bun, and analyze its role in preserving Dayak culture. The study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, using observation, interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques. The results show that the presentation of the Bahalarat Dance in the school includes movements, performers, music, make-up, and costumes, which are adapted to the educational context while maintaining traditional characteristics. The dance embodies values of togetherness, religiosity, respect for nature, and social responsibility. The learning process was conducted in stages through introduction, practice, and performance, which fostered students’ appreciation of local culture. The learning of Bahalarat Dance plays an essential role in cultural preservation through four aspects: protection, utilization, documentation, and development. This research emphasizes that local culture-based art education can be an effective strategy to instill cultural values while sustaining the Dayak cultural identity in the era of globalization.
